Dogs and Fireworks
As we get closer and closer to Canada Day (July 1) and Independance Day (July 4), I feel compelled to make a post about Fireworks and dogs. Every year on the days following holidays, I see numerous posts about how "my dog got scared by the Fireworks and ran away!".
Fireworks can be scary and triggering for many dogs. It's a VERY loud noise and sudden bright lights that they cannot understand! On the days/nights that it's likely that there's going to be fireworks, there are a few things you can do to ensure their safety and comfort.
First off, PLEASE do NOT take them with you when you go to watch or set off Fireworks!! Leave them at home. They are much safer at home and better yet, in their crate.
If you're going to be at home with your dog, go outside with them when they have to pee and even put a leash on! Being scared by something like Fireworks can make dogs do things that are totally out of character for them and they will suddenly jump fences, open gates and run away. Having a leash on them will help prevent these things from happening.
Get a good chew, bone or fill a Kong and freeze it to keep them occupied as well as give them a good outlet for their stress.
Some dogs do well with a tight shirt/vest to make them feel held/secure. Thundershirts are a great option for this!
Try to not talk to your dog or snuggle them if they do get scared. As much as we may want to comfort our pets, doing this can reinforce that "it's ok and good to be scared of that noise". Have some treats close by and just reward them for looking to you and even for making eye contact.
Have music, TV or white noise on, to cover up the sounds of the fireworks a bit.
