Crate training?

Let's talk Crate Training

What? When? Why? How?

What is crate training?
It is taking the appropriate steps to create a sense of safety and calmness in a crate.

When should I crate train my dog?

As soon as you get them! Whether the dog is 8 weeks old or 8 years old, start now!

Why should I crate train my dog?

There are many situations where your dog may need to be in a crate. The most common ones are if your dog ever has to be at a vet or groomers for any amount of time. They will need to be in a crate/kennel at these places while they wait their turn or while they wait to be picked up. Also, if your dog ever needs to have any surgery or procedure, they will typically need to be on crate rest in order to heal properly. If your dog needs to stay with family or friends while you are on holidays or if some emergency happens, they may want your dog to be contained in their home while they're away at work. One other reason it may be best to have your dog crate trained, is if they have separation anxiety. If your dog is stressed when you are gone, they may chew on things or relive themselves in the house. This can get very expensive - not only to fix and replace things they may wreck, but you may also find yourself stuck with expensive vet bills to remove foreign objects from your dog's intestines or stomach. (I could go on forever ). The crate should be a safe haven for your dog no matter where they are.

How do I crate train my dog?

Start with feeding your dog in the crate and create positive association with it. Don't use it as punishment and don't only use it when you leave. Play games around it and use it for nap time when you're home.

And, as always, if you're not sure, reach out to a trainer for help! It's very easy to create negative associations with things, so if you're not sure, reach out!

Happy training!
